4 Day Trips from La Jolla

October 22, 2018

At The Bed & Breakfast Inn at La Jolla, we pride ourselves on our ideal location. We’re just a short walk from downtown and from La Jolla Cove, and a short drive from the many attractions of San Diego. However, if you feel like you’ve seen it all on your trip and you want to add a little variety, a day trip can be just what you need to inject life back into your trip. And fortunately, La Jolla and the San Diego area are surrounded by sweeping scenery and interesting communities.

Julian

An hour and a half drive from La Jolla, Julian is a lush mountain town with a colorful history. It has its roots in the gold rush of the 1870s and you can still visit the gold mines today, now with the help of a tour guide who can share some of the exciting stories of that period in history. You can also go camping and fishing at the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park or Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve. There are even horse stables where you can go horseback riding. Don’t forget to take the narrated carriage ride where you can learn all about the town’s history.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

California is known for its historic Franciscan missions, and Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is among the oldest, dating back to 1798. Less than an hour’s drive from La Jolla, you can explore the impressive structure, from the remains of the soldiers barracks to the museum located in the old friar’s living quarters. You can also find here the oldest pepper tree in all of California, nearly 180 years old. This is a peaceful getaway, but also an interesting one, particularly for fans of architecture or history.

Temecula

Temecula offers beautiful views of vineyards and beyond. You can ride through them on horseback, hike, or simply park somewhere and take in the view for yourself. It’s a different experience from being on the beach. You can also drive an hour from La Jolla to Temecula to hit the links if you’re an avid golfer. But the best reason to visit Temecula is if the hot air balloon festivals are going on. Temecula is known for its hot air balloon festivals, where visitors can either watch from the ground or even — for a price — fly their own hot air balloon. It adds a touch of whimsy to your San Diego vacation and gives you something more to talk about when you get home.

Disneyland

If you have kids, you have time, and you’ve already checked out SeaWorld, then Disneyland is a must. The original Disney themed park still offers all the favorite attractions and rides, and now with the addition of Marvel and Star Wars to the Disney franchise, your kids can meet their favorite superheroes or jedis. But it’s not just for kids. Between the thrilling roller coasters, old favorite characters, and surrounding Anaheim, adults will enjoy their trip to Disneyland as well, and it’s only an hour and a half away from your La Jolla accommodations.
