Enjoying the Holidays in San Diego

November 25, 2018

The holidays are on their way, and with school taking a break and time off work, many people are planning their holiday vacations. If you’re not from California, you might not think of it as the ideal place to spend the holidays, but La Jolla and the greater San Diego area have much to offer. Between festivals, parades, great surf and even a few sightings of Santa, you’ll love the holiday cheer to be found on the West Coast.

Sunny Weather Year Round

You might not find a white Christmas in San Diego, but with our mild temperatures and sunny days year round, you can find a break from the chill of November and December. You can start the celebration with breakfast on the beach or go surfing with those you love. You’ll have less chance of winter storms ruining your plans. But if you’re worried that things won’t feel like Christmas without snow and knit scarves, don’t worry. Not only are there there delightful cafés where you can get a cup of hot chocolate, but there are a number of holiday themed events going on throughout San Diego that you can enjoy.

Holiday Season Festivals

In San Diego, the holiday cheer starts in November and carries through for the rest of the year. We begin with the Mother Goose Parade in El Cajon on November 18. This parade is full of whimsy and beloved children’s story characters that makes it the perfect event for families, especially those with small children. After that, on November 24, you can go to Julian for the tree lighting ceremony. You’ll be able to see snow on the caps of the mountains, and you may even get to see Santa while you’re there. On December 1, there’s another tree lighting ceremony in Little Italy.

The two-day Balboa Park December Nights festival is also worth a visit, with live music, food, and lively light displays. North Park Toyland Parade and the Starlight Parade, both on December 1, are full of delightful sights that can help you to get into the holiday spirit. Oceanside Harbor Parade of Lights on December 8 is one of the most popular holiday parades. Finally, on December 31, there’s the Port of San Diego Holiday Bowl Parade, the largest balloon parade in the country. Between the marching bands and creative floats, you won’t want to go home before catching this spectacular parade.

Where to Stay

So we’ve established that there’s plenty to do in San Diego during the holidays, and that you can enjoy both mild, sunny weather and all that holiday excitement. The next question is where to stay. The San Diego area is a vast, diverse area, and even the communities within the larger area are all very different. However, if you’re looking for a laid back experience where you can relax for the holidays, while still enjoying most of the festivities, consider La Jolla. You’ll have the beautiful La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores, as well as charming shopping boutiques and cafés, while remaining close to all the best festivities.
