Winter in San Diego and La Jolla

If you’re looking for an escape from the winter blues, with its chill and grey, cloudy days, a vacation to San Diego is the perfect plan. With its mild climate and sunny weather year round, San Diego will be sure to warm and cheer you for the holiday season and even beyond. Planning a trip to San Diego or nearby La Jolla this winter? Here are a few of our favorite suggestions for winter activities in San Diego and La Jolla.

Enjoy the Water

In San Diego and La Jolla, winter doesn’t mean that the time to explore the shore is over. Here you can kayak around La Jolla Cove, catching sight of the sea lions and exploring the famous Seven Sea Caves of La Jolla. And don’t think that the time of year means you can’t snorkel. San Diego’s warmer weather means the water is still mild enough for a swim or snorkel, whether from the beach or in a guided tour. If you prefer to ride the waves out instead of dip below them, grab a surfboard or stand up paddleboard (SUP) and head out for La Jolla Shores or Cove.

Check Out Torrey Pines

If you’re looking for a winter vacation in La Jolla that’s a bit on the drier side, consider hiking. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is open all year with 2,000 acres of protected natural life. The cliffs here overlook the beach beautifully, and there are a number of invigorating walking trails that allow you to take in some of the best views of this park. If you want a light, leisurely stroll, you can find it here. If you’re looking for something a little more athletic, there are more rugged trails as well. You may be able to spy a fox or bobcat in your trails — from a distance, of course. If that’s not enough excitement for you, consider paragliding over the cliffs of Torrey Pines for a truly unique view.

Try a New Holiday Dinner

Bored with the traditional roast or turkey dinner for the holidays? Consider going out to eat on Christmas or New Year’s Day, sampling some of the eclectic and colorful gastronomy of San Diego. Whether you’re looking for a unique pizza, tacos, or something that falls more under the purview of fine dining, you can find it all and more — often with a creative twist that’s purely San Diego. San Diego rides itself on a food culture that likes to push boundaries, so if it’s a less traditional meal you’re after — or simply a conventional meal done with excellent taste, you can find it here.

There’s so much more to enjoy about San Diego and La Jolla in the winter. Stroll through downtown La Jolla for a shopping day, or check out the many museums.
