Best Places to Run in La Jolla

February 4, 2019

A La Jolla vacation is a break from the pressures of the real world like work, school, and housework, but it doesn’t have to mean giving up your hobbies, especially if you love running. With sunny weather, fresh ocean air, and of course, great views, La Jolla can be the ideal place to go running. If you’re a frequent visitor to La Jolla, you probably already have some of your favorite spots, but if you’re a first time visitor or just haven’t had a chance to go running in La Jolla, here are some ideas of where to start. Make sure to bring a full bottle of water to stay hydrated!

Along the Coast

Fresh air is essential when running, and the air right along the ocean is fresh, salty perfection for a morning run. La Jolla is a laid back community without a complex layout so you can get in a good run along the coast, almost 3 and a half miles round trip. Start on Prospect Street and then turn onto Coast Boulevard. You’ll pass Ellen Browning Scripps Park, the scenic La Jolla Caves, and the Coast Walk Trail — or run trail, in your case. You can also run along the sands of La Jolla Shore. Sand as a softer surface offers more resistance than pavement, so it leads to a more exhilarating and productive run.

Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines State Reserve is a 2,000 acre coastal park and nature reserve. You’ll find rare species of flora and fauna here along your run, all protected and preserved by the park, but you’ll still be able to get in your exercise more or less unbothered by the wildlife around you. However, it does provide a stunning backdrop along your run. Make sure to stop for breath at the cliffs to take in the breathtaking view of the ocean below. There’s a lovely breeze and trails for beginners as well as trails for avid athletes, such as Razor Point Trail.

Jewel Trail

Jewel Trail starts near La Jolla Cove and continues all the way down the coast to Bird Rock. Like the other trails, it offers terrific views, though this one is a bit more in town than Torrey Pines. The trail is one way about 3.2 miles and doesn’t loop back around, but it offers a brisk breeze and the perfect opportunity to get your blood pumping. It is a favorite spot among tourists, so you may want to keep in mind that this trail could be a little crowded.

Wherever you decide to run in La Jolla, it will be a sure way to fall in love with the beautiful, sunny community. It’s also important to find accommodations for your vacation that will place you conveniently located to these trails. The Bed & Breakfast Inn at La Jolla is just minutes away from downtown La Jolla and a short walking distance from La Jolla Cove.
