No matter what time of year you come to visit La Jolla, there’s always something to do, but April is one of the most popular times of year for tourists. The days have become longer again, spring is here, and most importantly, spring break is here. Everyone from families to college students to couples or young professionals looking for a getaway will start to arrive in La Jolla. If you’re among the throng, you may be trying to build an itinerary for your trip. Here are some of the things going on in La Jolla this month:
Art Exhibits at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library
Through May 4, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library on Wall Street will be showcasing a mixed-media exhibit based on Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The title? “Music in the Key of Blue.” The artist? A local named Jim Machacek. There’s also a textile exhibit by Sibyl Rubottom and an exhibit called “Images Louder than Words” featuring favorites from the artists’ book collection.
“Diana” at the La Jolla Playhouse
Starting on April 2 and running through April 14, the La Jolla Playhouse will put on “Diana,” a musical about the famed Princess Diana herself. Follow her journey as she marries the Prince of Wales, gains worldwide fame, and ultimately comes to regret some of her choices. The musical is written by the same writers of the Tony-Award winning “Memphis,” making this newer show a must-see. Check out La Jolla Playhouse’s website for tickets.
Cakebread Cellars Wine Dinner At Herringbone
Herringbone is one of the most popular fine dining restaurants in La Jolla. On April 10, they partner with Cakebread Cellars, a renowned Napa Valley winery, to present the Vines & Vintages dinner party. It includes a four course meal prepared by Herringbone’s Chef Team, each paired with a different wine from Cakebread Cellars, and sweets for dessert. If you’re looking for a night out where you can really treat yourself, this is the place to be. Visit the Eventbrite page to make a reservation.
Online Travel Planning at the La Jolla Riford Library
Maybe La Jolla is just one stop on your long list of travel destinations this year. If that’s the case, you know how essential it is to plan ahead, and how much of that is done online these days. That’s why on Friday, April 12th, the La Jolla Riford Library is hosting an Oasis class all about booking travel plans, which travel companies you can trust, and how to get the most out of your vacation. Learn more about the event at the San Diego Reader’s website.
Spring Eggstravaganza at Birch Aquarium
This is a fun event for the whole family. Starting on April 13 and continuing the following weekend, Scuba Bunny will arrive at Birch Aquarium at Scripps with exciting themed dive shows. Kids can learn about animal eggs, create shark egg crafts, or even enjoy an “underwater egg hunt.” It’s the kind of spring celebration you won’t have experienced before and you won’t want to miss. Get tickets at the Birch Aquarium website.
