La Jolla Independent Businesses: Bars
After a day in the sun exploring the beaches and shopping stops in La Jolla, it’s time to stop at a local bar for some much needed refreshment. But local bars are more than simply a place to get a drink. They give you a taste of the community, a chance to socialize with locals and tourists alike, and sometimes fun activities like trivia night or a marathon of your favorite show. And why limit yourself to just one bar? If you’re planning a beer crawl during your La Jolla vacation, here are a few stops you’ll want to check out.
Raised By Wolves has the classy decor of an old speakeasy, with checkerboard marble floors, fancy Prohibition Era-esque chandeliers and lamps, and even a grand marble fountain behind the bar. The secret passageway leading from a small front shop to the cocktail bar only adds to that illicit ambiance. Visiting this bar will feel as though you’ve stepped through time. There’s a lengthy cocktail list, with drink names like Pelvic Sorcery, Mr. Famous, and Twilight Samurai. Of course, if your tastes are more classic, you can always find a tried and true Old Fashioned here.
The Shack offers a more laid back bar experience. Just off the beach, they have an outdoor patio that allows you to enjoy the view as well as one of their variety of draft beers. It’s decorated with straw roofs, sunny yellow coloring and surfboards to represent the laid back nature and popularity with surfers that the nearby Windansea Beach is known for. They offer happy hour from 3-7pm as well as Taco Tuesdays and “Industry Mondays,” in which they offer discounts to others who work in the restaurant industry.
From the name, you might expect a dimly lit, mahogany legal themed bar. Instead, Jose’s is a colorful, modern sports bar featuring not only a number of refreshing cocktails but delicious Mexican food. There’s family friendly dining during the day, the casual, fun atmosphere of a sports bar in the evening, and ocean views that stun all throughout. They have happy hour every weekday from 3-6 and are conveniently located on Prospect Street, so right in the center of everything.
Like The Shack, Nautilus Tavern is located near Windansea Beach, but with a bit of a more modern feel. This is the perfect classic bar and grill experience, the kind of place where you can chill with friends or stop in for a drink and some pub food before carrying on with the rest of your vacation. They have 30 beers on tap, including a number of craft brews, and all your favorite cocktails. The food is made from scratch, so you know that your lunch and dinner will be up to the same quality. Like Jose’s, they offer weekday happy hour from 3-6pm.
At the end of the night, after exploring the bars of La Jolla, you can relax and sleep in at your room with The Bed and Breakfast Inn at La Jolla. And when you book direct, we’ll price match the cost of your room with a 5% discount.
