For many, dogs are more than just a pet. They’re a member of the family. So when planning a vacation, the idea of leaving behind your dog can be hard. It can be a relief, then, to find a place where you don’t have to do so. La Jolla is an excellent place to visit for dog lovers and families that include dogs. Your dog will be thrilled with all the new sites and smells, and you’ll enjoy the quality time you get to spend soaking up new experiences with your best friend. Here’s our guide to enjoying La Jolla with your canine.
Walking the Dog in La Jolla
If you live in a landlocked area, your dog probably isn’t used to taking walks on the beach. Fortunately, La Jolla is full of beautiful beaches where you can walk your dog. From April through October, leashed dogs are allowed on the beach after 6pm, to ensure that they don’t interrupt the busiest beach times. From November through March, leashed dogs are allowed on the beach before 9am and after 4pm. You can take your dog out for a morning jog or simply a leisurely stroll to take in the new smells. La Jolla Shores is a popular spot here since it’s flat and easy for walking.
Looking for something more familiar? Take your dog to one of the parks in La Jolla, like Kellog Park or Scripps Park. There they’ll likely be able to meet other dogs while taking in the smell of fresh grass and barbecue. There’s even the La Jolla Colony Dog Park if you have the specific intention of introducing them to other dogs.
Shopping With Dogs in La Jolla
If you want to take your pup on a shopping excursion, there’s no place better than Muttropolis. This pet store sells everything your dog could want, from food to treats to new collars. They also offer grooming and training courses, and the staff famously spoils the four legged customers that they receive. There’s also a family owned pet shop named All About Animals, offering food, cages, and grooming among other pet related products and services. On La Jolla Boulevard, you can also find a pet store simply called Pet Shop.
Dining With Dogs in La Jolla
If you like to take your dog out to dinner, rest assured that there are plenty of dog-friendly restaurants in La Jolla to accommodate you. Barbarella, with its outdoor patio, even includes a doggie menu, including a scoop of vanilla ice cream for your pup. Cody’s is another restaurant that has a dog-friendly patio, one with a warm fire pit and views of the ocean nearby. Looking for something more casual? Try the outdoor seating at Harry’s Coffee Shop, the oldest diner in La Jolla.
