Halloween Activities In San Diego This Year

Any time of year is a great time to visit San Diego, but many visitors come by in the summer — at the height of tourist season — or in winter, to get a break from the cold. One time of year that you may have overlooked is autumn, especially Halloween. Halloween is a holiday that’s spooky, atmospheric, and frankly just fun, and San Diego is happy to deliver on all those accounts. Spending your October in San Diego and looking for things to do this Halloween season? Here are a few of our suggestions.

Spooky Trails at Hellhole Canyon

Starting as early as October 12 is the 16th annual Spooky Trails at Hellhole Canyon, a chance to explore a haunted trail to get into the spooky season. There will also be an opportunity to carve a jack-o’-lantern and prizes will be given out for the best one, as well as costume contests for: funniest, scariest, prettiest, and most original. It’s the kind of Halloween celebration that fits however you choose to celebrate the season. At the end of the night, there’s also a free screening of “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.”

Hauntfest On Main

If you’re looking for a free, family friendly event, Hauntfest on Main in El Cajon has you covered. It checks all the boxes of a Halloween celebration: a pumpkin patch, costume contest, candy challenges, carnival rides, and lots of fun for kids as well as adults. The event kicks off at 5pm on October 25th and lasts until 10pm.

Birch Aquarium’s Haunted Aquarium: Sea Monster Mash

Located in La Jolla as part of the Scripps Institute campus, Birch Aquarium hosts a haunted aquarium event every Halloween season. This year it starts on October 25 and runs through October 27. Here you’ll find an exhibit for glowing underwater creatures while you enjoy live music and hear spooky stories. It’s an after-hours event so you will need a separate ticket to attend. Tickets are $30.

Balboa Park Halloween Family Day

If you want to do Halloween in San Diego, you can’t miss Balboa Park Halloween family day, the largest free Halloween carnival in the area. It’s also a daytime event, running from 11am to 4pm on October 26, so you’ll still have time to check out other Halloween events in the evening. Here you’ll find a number of Halloween themed displays, enter in contests for fun prizes, enjoy carnival rides, and check out the live music and food trucks. Any museums that are involved in Balboa Park’s Halloween Family Day also allow free admission to children 12 and under with an adult.
