How to Spend a Weekend in La Jolla

March 16, 2020

La Jolla is a small, laid back beach community, but when you stay here for just a weekend, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the question of how to “do it all.” Between the beautiful beaches, art galleries, five star restaurants, and breathtaking parks, it can be hard to know where to start. It’s good to know that you don’t have to worry about getting bored in La Jolla, but how do you plan your trip if you have only a limited time? Fortunately, we have the guide to help you spend the perfect weekend in La Jolla:

Friday

Whether you’re coming in on Friday or just starting to explore after coming in on Thursday afternoon, Friday should be a day to take it easy. If you have time during the day, check out some of the beaches. La Jolla Shores or Windansea Beach are popular choices, with sprawling shores and sunny weather.

Next, find somewhere to get drinks for happy hour. We Olive & Wine Bar is something of a hidden gem, but it has terrific patio seating and views of the beach. Herringbone offers $8 cocktails and $6 glasses of wine, and it’s a great place to enjoy seafood for dinner, as well. If you’re looking for something upscale for dinner, check out NINE-TEN or George’s at the Cove, with renowned chef Trey Foshee.

Want to round the night off with some entertainment? Catch a show at La Jolla Playhouse or The Comedy Store, a well-known comedy venue in the area.

Saturday

Saturday is a day for exploration. You can pack the most into Saturday, but don’t feel like you have to rush. Start the day with some scrumptious breakfast. The Cottage is a delightful brunch spot located inside a vintage home. If you have a heftier appetite, Richard Walker’s Pancake House may be the way to go. You’ll feel like a local eating at Harry’s Coffee Shop, a La Jolla owned establishment that attracts locals and tourists alike. And, of course, when you stay at The Bed & Breakfast Inn, you can enjoy our complimentary three-course breakfast and save the money you might have paid for breakfast on other elements of your trip.

Next, stop by La Jolla Cove and watch the sea lions playing on the beach. You can check out the sea caves of La Jolla through a guided or self-guided kayak tour. If you want more wildlife or nature in your La Jolla trip, you can hike or bike through Torrey Pines State Park, with 6 trails, including a beachside trail, and over 1,500 acres.

If you’re interested in art, Saturday could be a great day to check out the art galleries in town, such as Ian Ely Art Gallery or the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. More interested in museums? There’s the Map and Atlas Museum of La Jolla for history buffs, the Nautical History Gallery & Museum, and Birch Aquarium at Scripps, all within La Jolla. And of course, Saturday is a great day for shopping downtown.

For dinner, check out some of the local restaurants like Catania or Piatti for Italian cuisine or The Marine Room, where you can watch the waves splash against the windows at high tide.

Sunday

Sunday you can take it easy and allow yourself to wind down. Sunday brunch is a vacation staple, and in addition to The Cottage, Parakeet Cafe or Herringbone could be great options for brunch. Sunday could also be a good day to have a picnic on the beach before you have to leave. If the waves are good, get in some surfing or body surfing at Windansea Beach. If you haven’t explored La Jolla’s lunch options, check out The Taco Stand, The Promiscuous Fork, or Burger Lounge.

Make sure to take some time to relax in your comfortable La Jolla inn rooms before packing to leave. This itinerary can be adjusted, depending on what constitutes a weekend for you, but it will help you to leave La Jolla feeling that you had a fulfilling vacation...even if only for a weekend. Don’t forget to book direct with The Bed & Breakfast Inn — we’ll price match the cost of your room and even throw in a 5% discount.
