How to Choose the Perfect Vacation Destination

Sometimes the decision to take a vacation starts not with a destination, but a feeling. Maybe you just came out of a bad relationship or maybe you’ve been dealing with a lot of stress at work. On the other hand, maybe your vacation is your way of rewarding yourself for a new career achievement, or you’ve just come into some money. You know that you’re ready to take a vacation — the question is where. And where you decide to go will impact how well you enjoy your vacation. Here are our tips for choosing a perfect vacation destination:

Think About Who’s Going

Is this a solo trip, or something for the whole family? Maybe you’re going with your sweetheart or with some of your best friends. If you’re planning to travel with people, get their input. What are they looking for? A relaxing trip to the beach? Exhilarating hiking and beautiful views? Lots of opportunities for shopping? Make a list of the priorities you have and the things you want to do for your vacation. Then find a destination that fits that, or better yet, a place that does it all.

Consider the Time

There are a few things to consider when it comes to time. First, time of year. For instance, in winter, you might want to travel somewhere that’s warm. In spring, you might want to get out of the rain and travel somewhere that’s mostly sunny. Think about the time difference between you and your destination: jet lag can be a pain, and you want to be prepared. Consider, too, the amount of time you’ll have on your vacation. If you only have a limited time, however, you may want a quieter vacation over a busier one, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed.

Do Your Research

These days, it’s far easier to research for vacations than in the days of travel brochures. You can simply enter in any destination that comes to mind on Google and be instantly flooded with pages of search results. You can learn what to do, where to go, what to watch out for, what former tourists and even locals think. So no matter whether you plan to take a vacation an hour away or across the country, it’s a good idea to do your research first.

Visualize Relaxation

Close your eyes and try to picture feeling completely relaxed. What’s around you? What do you hear, see, or taste? Ultimately, the goal of this vacation is to relax or reward you. Make a list of the things that you feel best doing, or the experiences you’ve never had but always wanted to try. Then decide what’s most important to you and look for a vacation destination that fits that picture.

Check Accommodations

It’s not all about the scenery and the tourist attractions. You’ll be spending your nights and a significant amount of time in between exploring at your accommodations, so you want to make sure you’re as comfortable there as possible. The cost of accommodations will give you a good idea of the budget you need to set for the trip, as well.
